Photographic Injustice

June 3, 2009

Raining and misty and cool and grey.

I wish I could take a picture of the smell of wet sage and damp soil.

Today was the first all day ride. It was a scenic ride, so walking only. Our destination was Sheep Camp, which is an old homesteading property turned BLM land turned sheep rancher’s summer camp turned back into BLM land turned into our trail. Last time a sheep was in that field was the 50’s. The cabin foundations were pretty neat though. Easy to imagine some intrepid homesteaders gardening there years and years ago.

Loving the rain right now. Not loving what the rain does to the pastures and stalls. The poor horses that aren’t crowding the one island of dry land are standing in a foot of mud. My boots are not thrilled.

Kinetic has a puncture :(. Poor boy got into a scrap with some barbed wire. He got away from it in good shape considering, but I won’t be surprised if he’s pretty ouchy tomorrow.

I wish you could all see what I see right now. The sky is a powder gray and rolling over this vibrant green of new aspens. The red roof of the lodge is in the foreground. It sounds like a rainstick.

I’m tired in a full body way that only occurs after an all day ride on a rainy afternoon. The rain approves and validates my laziness. Gives a big thumbs up to my plan of falling asleep early after a long read and cup of hot chocolate.
