Tiny Baby Mustangs

April 19, 2009

I stopped by the Los Angeles Equestrian Center today to take a peek at the remaining mustangs leftover from the three day wild horse adoption. Oh. My. Gosh.

Babies.

Yearling babies.

Cute precocious yearling babies.

Cute precocious yearling babies with fuzzy manes and itty tails.

I haven’t had the privilege to really acquaint myself with mustangs thus far.  We have a mustang on the ranch, but he’s so far from wild that it’s difficult to believe he was ever a wild range horse. Other than that, my limited exposure has come in the form of media depictions, browsing BLM Internet auction sites, and seeing some prisoner trainer mustangs.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect. My internet searching mostly produces images of ewe necked, sway backed scrawny horses with winter coats. Not flattering. I mostly expected to see the same thing represented here; some sort of cross between a draft horse and an emu. Or at best, a stocky creature more suitable for dressage than for jumping.

Not so not so not so. I got cute, flashy, and finely put together. Most of them looked like they had morgan, arabian, and quarter horse influences. They were cute. Not rangy. Not badly put together. Not sway backed. Cute. They might all grow up to be little hunter prospects.

There was also a mustang posterchild there. I thought this horse was one of them fancy shmancy horses kept at the LAEC because she was so nice looking. Nope. Mustang. Being ridden around bareback by the girl who started her and trained her front to back. Great manners and no spook on that horse.

I want me a mustang. If I had the time and resources to train a yearling, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Alas, I’m a barely employed 22 year old with no place of my own and already own a grumpy old horse. No cute baby mustang for me….yet.

I also want me $600/month to board at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. It’s like a tiny horse city equipped with banquet hall, tack stores, coffee shop, and cross country course. jealous.

Fun thing I learned: california has mustangs!!!!! For some reason, I thought mustangs were too gloriously symbolic of the wild old west to be california residents. I thought only places like Nevada and Montana could have that honor. But no…California has something like twenty herds of mustangs. Who knew? Makes me like california a little bit more.

But enough babbling….on to bebbie pictures!

Colorado has sucked the hunter jumper snob out of me. Once upon a time, I would only consider big bay warmblood type horses for the ring. In a past life I never would have considered a roan or paint or buckskin for showing purposes….but now I think “Hot damn she’s flashy! Me want!”

^^^I want I want I want.

Hi! Just found your blog…I have two horses, a QH mare and a half-arab (she is actually 98.43%). I was thinking of adopting a mustang, but it didn’t work out for now, I can’t travel to the pick up points which are hundreds and hundreds of miles away. Anyway, I check them out on the BLM website where they have online auctions. There is a trainer, Steve Mantle, who rides them and sells them through the BLM site…the horse I wanted was a cute little chestnut number. I thought he would sell for a lot, but he went for $325. It made me sad. Well, happy the horse was adopted, but sad the horses, even the trained one, can go for so little. I love your chicken. I currently have two sheep that were survivors of a mountain lion attack. Anyway, I will check out your blog!

    Awwwwwwwww…..
You’re right, not badly put together from what I can see, not what I would have expected either. Nice.

Hmmm… guess California ain’t so bad, now is it? (I’ve lived there, I loved it) It’s all what’s inside of us, what we choose to see, what we look for. Now she’s looking for baby mustangs. Things could be worse 🙂
